William F. Cipolla, PhD

William F. Cipolla was appointed Dean, School of Liberal Arts in July 2009. Dr. Cipolla’s responsibilities include supporting the chairs and faculty members of the School of Liberal Arts, overseeing the hiring of faculty, developing and implementing the curriculum, and maintaining academic standards and policies.

Dr. Cipolla joined Berkeley College as Chair of the Liberal Arts and Sciences Department, NY, in September 2008.

Dr. Cipolla has a distinguished record of teaching and academic administration. Before joining Berkeley College, he served as Associate Dean and Special Assistant to the Dean of the School of Continuing and Professional Studies at New York University. As Vice President for Academic Affairs and Acting President of The American University of Paris, Dr. Cipolla was often a guest on French radio and television, speaking about the American cultural presence in Europe at that time. He has also served as Chair of the Department of Foreign Languages at both the State University of New York at Potsdam and McDaniel College in Westminster, MD.

Dr. Cipolla has an MA and PhD from Johns Hopkins University, an AB from the University of Pennsylvania, and has had advanced studies at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes in Paris, France. Dr. Cipolla is bilingual in English and French, and he also has some knowledge of Italian, German, Swedish, Russian, and Arabic.
